Over 40 million people in Ethiopia live without access to clean water.
Drop of water (DoW) formerly known as “Help for a Drop of Water” is a legally registered NGO established by seven female former Mekelle University students. They were inspired to form DoW after meeting one of Hollywood’s top movie stars Matt Damon in April 2009 on his visit to rural areas of Ethiopia for a clean drinking water project. They thought to themselves, if a foreigner can take the initiative to come across the world and help our own people, then why can’t we? This is how Drop of water began.
Since then, DoW passionate and dedicated staffs achieved what seems impossible in the minds of many others. Because of their relentless effort, they constructed a number of water projects that provide clean drinking water for nearly 80,000 rural people of Ethiopia.
Drop of water being a university students’ initiative and youth led organization, mobilizes and engages youth resources and implements clean water supply and sanitation projects in the rural communities of Ethiopia. DoW believes youth’s power and participation in developmental issue of their community is great exposure, Honor, privilege and moral obligation. To embed the culture of valuing water resources and use of water resources into the next generation it is essential to invest in current generation.
